The Joys of Ferret Medicine

Ah yes, ferret medicine. It is one of those things that just makes you sit back and recall a special time from long ago involving a roaring fire and much merriment. Ha! Or not! I repeat, I would much rather give Drake a shot twice a day than to be shooting liquid antibiotics down his throat. However, since I must, I feel like I should share my experiences with you in case you ever find yourself in a similar situation. The first time we tried giving it to him it was just straight antibiotic and he foamed and spat and shook his head and pretty much didn’t get any of it down. That night we tried sucking up a bit of honey into the syringe with it but I didn’t want to use much at all since ferrets cannot tolerate sugar very well. That didn’t go over very well either. More foaming and spitting up. Still, it was better than straight up bitterness. The next day we tried sucking some ferretvite up into the syringe with it because Drake loves ferretvite – all of my ferrets always have. I figured it had a strong flavor that he enjoyed and I didn’t have to worry about giving him too much. It worked okay but he could still taste the antibiotics and still drooled quite a bit of it out. Blah. Finally, yesterday, I decided to try just feeding him the ferretvite and then sneaking bits of the meds into the back of his mouth while he’s swallowing the nummy stuff. Of course, he realizes this and tries to spit it back up but if I can get him to start lapping up the ferretvite fast enough, he gets distracted and keeps it down. This is by far the most effective way we’ve come across to get the meds down him. So there, if you ever have a ferret that requires antibiotics, give it a try. Who knows, maybe you could transfer this knowledge to other animals. We’ll see a little later on when I give dewormer to all the different furry kids (minus the rats). As for the ear mites, Drake definitely has them worse than Nate and he’s definitely a bigger baby about them too. We can just barely scruff Nate and clean out his ears with cotton swabs and then drop in the drops and he doesn’t like it but it’s no real fight. Trouble, on the other hand, squirms and makes his unhappy little noises and tries to kick us away with his back feet and tries to push us away with his front ones. And he’s got less scruff to grab so it’s really hard to do him. Plus, on top of all of that, he’s got extra hairy ears which, trust me, makes it extremely difficult to get one little drop of Tresaderm into an ear canal the size of, well, a ferret’s ear canal. Wish us luck that all of this medicine is making our boy better – both of them, actually.

And now for some pictures from our new camera! I think I’ll show one kid per day, just to stretch it out and make choosing what picture to post over the next few, very busy days. But today I’ll show you a nice landscape picture too because it’s pretty!

Do you see the detail in that picture of Zane? Look at his eyes and his whiskers! You can see every hair! That’s amazing, don’t you think?

Oh, and last night Nikki honked my butt cheek. Not kidding. She was helping me look for my little pillow in the dark, reached down, and honked my butt. We then proceeded to laugh about it for 5 minutes. What a good way to go to sleep. Just thought you guys might enjoy that little tidbit of information.

Have a good night, everyone! We need to pack! Deadline is in 2 days! Ack!

Nikons and Dog Noses

Last night was long and boring. I tried doing all the research for my paper which I absolutely hate. Didn’t end up finding much since Nikki and I both spent about an hour trying to figure out if Science was paginated by volume or by issue. Did you know that there even was such a thing as different styles of pagination? Did you know that APA citations are different depending on the type of pagination? I know, I wish I didn’t know either. How dull is that? And yet it’s up there, wasting space in my head. I suppose, though, that since I also have most of the FreeCreditReport.com songs logged away in there too, I shouldn’t really be complaining. “F-r-e-e that spells free, credit report dot com, baby!” Anyway, I digress. So last night Nikki stayed up late helping me but still went to bed before me. Well when I finally got to bed I decided to wake her up with a barage of questions about her snake and then decide to let her sleep again. Only that doesn’t last long because I once again realize that my carabiner is missing and it upsets me. See, my carabiner is my good luck. I found it when I was on a summer trip in Colorado and while I could never use it for climbing since I don’t know if it was dropped, it has actually become part of my wardrobe. That’s right, it resides clipped to my pocket and it has very seriously been there since my sophomore year of high school. I really do think of it as my good luck so now maybe you’ll understand why I was so upset that it had been missing for going on a month now. I don’t know why it got to me so bad last night at around 1 in the morning, but it did so up I got to look. Poor Nikki woke up and tried to help me find it. Through some looking back on when I thought I’d lost it (around the time of the drag show) I finally managed to locate it in the pocket of my khakis which I had never checked because I forgot they existed. Now why did I tell you this story? I don’t know, because it’s important to me. And because I was keeping Nikki up in the wee hours of the morning before she went and took her final this morning at 8 am. Oops. Sorry baby!

Anyway, I was going to tell you about our adventures in ferret medicine but since I took up so much space blabbing about my carabiner, I’ll save that for tomorrow. Suffice it to say that I would so much rather give a ferret a shot than try and shoot even 0.5 mL of bitter tasting medicine down his throat twice a day. And today is only the third day out of 14. Joy.

Right before work I decided to pull out and play with our new camera. We were both so excited as I took out the 18-55 mm lens and clicked it into place, slid the battery into place and configured the clock on the camera for the very first time! Then in went the memory card and it was pure excitment. Heh, LS read the rather lame directions every step of the way – did you know when you take a picture you should take a stance with one leg slightly in front of the other and then push the little button to make it take the picture? Amazing! *shakes head* Anyway, it was so cool. Okay, the first pictures we took will never be seen by anyone because a Nikon is not made to take self portraits by holding the camera out at arms length. Yeah, I won’t even describe how awkward we looked. BUT! The next picture I took was of Spunky, then Akima, and Zane, and Merlin. I was so amazed at how sharp these automatic everything pictures were turning out that I ran about like some giddy little schoolgirl snapping off shots of everyone. Oh man do I love this camera!

I then took it to work where my first big panic-attack-that-can-only-come-from-a-brand-new-expensive-toy occurred. See, I was going around and taking pictures of the dogs when I had time because I want great pictures of all these great dogs that I’m going to miss so much. At first I was doing awesome and got a bunch of pictures from the playroom dogs without any mishaps. Oh man did I get some good ones! But then when I was trying to get a picture of this beautiful, old German Shepherd owned by a co-worker, he turned his head suddenly and slimed my lens with his nose! Oh no! I like tried to wipe it off but it was too gooey and then I ran into the back to try and call Nikki because I was so worried I had just ruined my new pretty. Of course, I was overreacting, but wouldn’t you? She called me back and I cried at her (not literally) about how I had already messed it up and she said she didn’t know what to do. But my baby is such a sweetheart, you wanna know what she did? I was in the back wiping down the cabins when she appeared around the corner with lunch, a drink and the lens cleaning kit! Isn’t she the best? The only problem is that the solution sucks. It leaves streaky residue on the lens. More sadness. It’s okay, though, because we tested it and it doesn’t even show up on the pictures I take. *happy dance*

After Nikki left I sat at work alone and actually worked on my paper. I got 2 pages worth of introduction done, too! Yes! Go me! It still needs work mainly because I didn’t cite anything. Yeah, I’m doing it all backwards. I wrote what I want to put based on the knowledge I already have since I just pick up random tidbits of everything and now I have to go out and find places that say those things so I can cite them as my sources. *raised eyebrow* Yeah, that’s just how I roll. My parents helped me find a bunch of articles though since they have access to the DuPaul and Harvard databases so hopefully I can get that done tomorrow. Then I have the conclusion. One step at a time. I can do this.

After work Nikki took me to Walmart so we could get new cleaning solution for my lens. Walmart didn’t appear to have any but after much searching high and low (and around and around the same small section of store) we found a pen type deal that has a retractable brush, a spray top and a nice cloth that won’t leave fuzz all over the lens like the crap thing I got with the camera. It made me happy because I saw one when I was researching our camera and thought it was cool. It’s like spy gear for my Nikon! Dun dun dundun dun dun! Okay, I’ll stop there. After that we came back, stuffed ourselves with all sorts of good food and digested over an episode of Charmed. Now we need to do the whole ferret thing and then I need a shower and Nikki needs sleep. So much for packing – and my dad is going to be here in 3 days! >_< Good night all!

. . .

. . .

You thought I was going to forget your cute thing, right? Nope. It’s Wednesday, too! Here’s your video!

Too Cute!

Today went by way too fast. It really sucks. I had to waste so many hours at work when I needed to be here packing. We have people coming to look at the place and right now we can’t even walk!!! How is this supposed to happen? No matter how much we get done, there’s still too much left. And the house just keeps getting more and more messy! Two of the closets are semi clean but that means that all the things that were in them are now scattered around on the floor! How can trying to be organized be so messy? I’m trying to keep everything together with like things and trying to go so far as to write on every box and bag what’s in it. And my mom suggested putting stickers on everything and numbering it and making a master list on my computer about what’s in it. Good idea, and we’re gonna try, but that means even more to do! AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! So yeah, sat at work and wasted my day. Okay, okay, I was actually good and after I was the only one there I pulled out my laptop and worked on my research paper. I got my methods section done which, when formatted correctly, came to be just under 2 pages! Awesome huh? My paper has to be at least 6 pages so that’s a nice chunk. I’m still avoiding the intro like the plague but I need to stop doing that since it’s the hardest for me. I hate researching. I already did the experiment. Why do I have to go find other people’s work and tell you about it in my own paper? Gah! So stupid and a waste of my time (of which I have none). Anyway, work was okay. Some awesome dogs were there today (Tazz, Reggie, the Twins, Belle, Tutty, Stella, Bubba, all of them!) and I’m really starting to realize how soon I’m going to leave them. It’s enough to make me cry (I already did one night last week). I love these dogs. I really, truly do. I can fall in love with animals fast and this is going to be so, so hard on me. Oh man, new subject. So after work we went and picked up boxes at the school and then it was off to Walmart (after leaving the poor, mistreaed pup at home for more room). Turns out he could have come because the people at Walmart forgot to leave us boxes. Great, we were counting on those. Still, we got packing tape, garbage bags (for packing, not trash) stickers, and some cloth for the inside of the bag Nikki’s knitting. Then we came back and Nikki made food and I, well, I made a huge mess. Why can’t this just be over with? Why does me trying to pack make everything worse? I’m trying to be good! And it’s turning out bad! HELP!

More Mess!

More Mess!

This is what happened AFTER we worked for a couple hours! Why? What am I doing so wrong? Oh, and if you look really hard, you can see a puppy in the back, being dwarfed by the massive pile of crap in front of him. >_<

Now we seriously need some cheer up time. And, I know you want to see that last picture of Spunky modeling over Thanksgiving break, but today is Wednesday! Which means you get a video! Because I had time to do it again! Yes! So here is a video of Merlin when he was a kitten. And it looks like he’s bugging the crap out of Spunky, but don’t be fooled. Spunky loves his kitten!

Boxes Make the Best Toys

Nikki and I were watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition today (as is a daily habit as of late) and the family today was a woman who had adopted 7 children with different disabilities. People like that are just amazing. But it got me thinking about adoption again. Nikki and I have thought about all sorts of options for having children in the future. We can never have an “oops” or just decide to have a baby and, well, you know. It sucks. It’s a hard truth. And no matter if we decide to adopt or try and have our own, it’s a long, expensive, stressful process. Anyway, the reason I started looking more into adoption today is because I feel about children as I do about animals. There are so many children out there already that need someone to love them. Why should they go through life without a family just because everyone wants to have their own? Okay, I’m still not sure what we’d decide and I definitely know the draw of having your own child, but maybe both would work, too? Have your own and adopt? I don’t know. Anyway, I looked into gay adoption and found a pretty cool place that does open adoptions and they had lots of gay couples that they had already placed babies with and that were still looking. It was just neat to see a place that was so open and accepting of gay parents. Still, to give an example of how complicated having children will be for us, if we decide adoption we have to decide how old we want the child to be, if we want an international adoption, if we want an open or closed adoption and add to all of that the fact that whichever we choose we will have to find gay friendly adoption agencies and hope the country hasn’t stolen all of our rights by then. *sigh* Sometimes it just seems to overwhelming, but we still want to have kids in the future. We’ll see.

So I was going to talk about my leopard geckos tonight but somehow the day flew by and I’m tired. I want to be able to give them a proper introduction so tonight I’m going to just post some cute pictures I got of the kitties yesterday. Anyone who’s ever even met a cat knows that the title of this post is true. Nikki and I had boxes out in the living room since we’ve slowly been working on packing and the cats thought that was just the coolest thing. Hope you enjoy!

Merlin Started the Trend

Merlin Started the Trend

The boxes were stacked 3 deep and they loved hiding in the middle one. He looks so cute and innocent – hah!

She's So Dainty in There!

She Looks So Dainty in There!

Akima is always so aware of her surroundings. And she looks like she’s trying to find a way to cause trouble in this picture!

He's Trying to Be So Sneaky. . .

He's Trying to Be So Sneaky. . .

Zane was funny because he seemed like he was going to stalk her, but then he decided it wasn’t worth the effort and just stayed in there and watched her.

And last, but not least:

How Many Kitties Can You Spot?

How Many Kitties Can You Spot?

Haha, that picture totally made me laugh when I looked at it later. I didn’t even know all three of them were there until then. Haha. Cute!

There you have it. I hope you enjoyed the cuteness! There’ll be more packing madness to come, I’m sure! Have a good night/day everyone!

Kit-Kitty, Little Kit-Kitty

Howdy all! So I started out today by bolting upright when my alarm went off at 9 and freaking out because it was light out and I thought I was late for work. >_< Awesome. Anyway, we got out of bed pretty soon after and LS made me some cheese toast for breakfast. I pretended to be productive by going to the bank to turn in my paycheck but after that I got lazy and watched some Bewitched and I Love Lucy. I looked up Bewitched on Wikipedia and found out some cool stuff. I had always thought it was Dick York that was gay, but I was wrong. It was actually Dick Sargent! And he and Elizabeth Montgomery (Samantha) were Grand Marshals of the Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade in 1992. Isn’t that just cool? Yeah, it’s not on the subject of pets, but it is something that’s important to me, so why not talk about it? I actually got a nap today, too! An accidental one (I fell asleep during an I Love Lucy episode) but a nap nonetheless! Still tired, though. After that, I woke up and we actually got some work done today! We went into the basement to find some empty boxes and started packing. I packed up some of the game consoles we don’t use much (our NES games, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and N64), Nikki packed up her VHS and our CDs, and we did some dishes. Oh man did we have a lot of dishes (there’s still a ton left) because our roommate never does dishes anymore even though that’s kind of her job. Seriously, the dishes were stacked up like a foot and there were several inches of water in each side of the sink because it wouldn’t drain. It was nasty! So yeah, lots of work, TONS of dust, and we’ve barely made a dent. I’m so freaking out about it now!

Anyway, don’t worry, we’re getting to cuteness too! Tonight is definitely a Merlin night! Nikki already put up an awesome picture of him yesterday on her blog so I was feeling left out. Plus, it just seems like it’s time. Merlin is our newest and youngest kitten – and he was completely unplanned. Want to see who I’m talking about? Good! Because I have the cutest, most heart-meltiest picture to show!

Sleeping Kitten

Sleeping Kitten

That picture was taken on the day we took Merlin home. As I said, we had no idea he was coming. Merlin entered our lives on July 17 of this year. Nikki, our roommate Wendy and I went downtown to attend a Maxwell Street Days. I had never heard of this before, so if you don’t know what it is either, it’s where stores from all over town all come out and sell their goods on the street for discounted prices. Anyway, we were walking around looking at things and we were nearing the end when we saw a certain someone (a teacher of mine) that made us want to turn around and run the other way. But me, being stubborn, decided that I wasn’t going to let him keep me from missing things. Well, we walked past and right there were two women standing with a basket of two kittens and asking if we knew anyone who wanted a free kitten. Of course we scrambled over and cooed over the cute kittens. Yeah, I don’t know how it happened, but Nikki and LS really wanted a kitten and I miraculously said yes. They were just too cute and I hate saying no to them. We weren’t sure which of the two to choose so the women put the basket on the ground and Spunky picked which one he wanted. Seriously, one hung back and the other jumped right over and stuck his face into Spunky’s giant one. So there it was. We had a kitten. We carried him around for the rest of our day there and then took him home and took TONS of pictures! We had to keep him away from the other cats until we took him into the vet the next day and made sure he was feline leukemia negative. Anyway, when he was a kitten he was very sweet and quiet. Yeah, hasn’t been like that in months. Now he is a total terror. He has grown at a rapid rate and is now, at 6 months old, bigger than Akima is! Seriously! From that tiny little fluff ball…

What a Big Boy!

What a Big Boy!

To this! He is such a trouble maker! He drives us insane every single day! He eats our food, drags things all over the house, pounce on us like trampolines, tries to bolt the door every single time we leave or enter the house, annoys Akima, bites us when he gets mad… and we love him! He’s growing into such a big boy. In fact, today is special for him. Guess what I found on the floor earlier? A baby kitten tooth! He’s losing his baby teeth already! I swear we just got him! At the moment he’s passed out on the floor with Spunky. I should do the same soon, though we barely have anything on the bed. That’s thanks to Akima, who tried to kill another fish today, ate Nikki’s plant, and peed on Nikki’s pillow and two of our blankets. Fantastic. *sigh* Our kids truly are our labor of love!

Pretty Pretty Princess

I almost didn’t update today because I’m exhausted. We slept pretty well last night after the show (which was, well, okay, but still disappointing) but today is such a blah day here in Northern Wisconsin that it’s hard to fully wake up. It was also stressful due to a stupid argument I caused. Don’t worry, everything is better now. But to raise mine and Nikki’s spirits (and hopefully yours!) here is another cutie to look at. I give you…

Akima!

Akima!

I met Akima when I went with my friend Carrie to the pound where she was doing an internship (this is the same pound Zane and Spunky are from). She was the sweetest little grey kitten. I didn’t have Zane at the time (GREAT STORY, remember?) and I just loved her. Still, I didn’t plan on getting another cat. When I went back again, she was still there, and, silly me, I gave her her name. Well, we all know that once you name an animal, it’s so much harder to give them up. Still, Zane was coming back (From where? Intriguing!) so I knew I wasn’t going to get her. Two weeks went by where I was constantly dreaming and thinking about her so I finally decided to get her on September 27, 2005. Just as a foster, of course. Yeah. Three and something years later, and my princess is perched behind me. (Just got hit in the head by a lamp that was knocked over by a certain tabby kitten named Merlin). Akima is your stereotypical cat – she’s very aloof (we say she’s an “independent woman”) until she wants attention and then she’s all in your face. Again, she has amazing eyes. All my kids have great eyes! Anyway, that’s my kitten. That’s right, she’s still called “kitten”. I also call her “princess” and Nikki calls her “little bird” and “my lady”. I suppose we should be calling her “fisher” too (she’s the one that went after Aristotle) but no matter what she does, I still love her with all my heart. Look at her! How could you not?

Peek-A-Boo!

Continuing on with the kid introductions, I think now is the appropriate time to introduce Zane. Zane is my wonderful mostly black male cat. I got him from the local pound on February 9, 2005 when he was about 6 months old. He has the most gorgeous golden eyes (seriously, gold/orange, not the typical yellow) and the sweetest personality. Zane also has an amazing story, though I think I just might keep everyone hanging and not tell it until later. Muahahaha! Anyway, here’s a picture of Zane for you.

Stealth Kitty

Stealth Kitty

Uh-oh. He’s hiding! Seriously, Zane is one of the biggest scaredy cats I’ve ever met. He runs and hides whenever anyone new comes into our house, there’s a loud noise, or we bring out the dreaded vacuum. He also just likes to crawl under blankets. This one is from a day when we were cleaning the bedroom so our comforer was lying on the floor. He decided to be Ninja Kitty I guess. It’s funny because I’m pretty sure his entire back end was actually sticking out. *runs off to check*

Yeah, You Missed a Little Something There...

Yeah, You Missed a Little Something There, Bud...

See? Silly boy. Anyway, he’s now about 4 years old and quite the laid back dude (you know, when he’s not bolting in fear) and very wise. He was the first kid to really start loving Nikki (besides Spunky, the whore dog) and he made her feel so much like part of the family. He brought us closer together, so we owe him a lot. Which I suppose means I owe him a better photo. *runs off again*

Look! His Whole Face!

Look! His Whole Face!

He’s my sweetheart. Also, I will need to find better pictures of him soon. Getting great photos of him is hard since he’s black and cameras have a hard time focusing on him. Also, Nikki has a lot more pictures on her computer that I currently don’t have access to. *looks pointedly at Nikki* When I find a better shot of his whole body, I can show off his Buddha belly. Yeah, he’s a big boy, but I wouldn’t want him any other way. He’s just perfect. And he’s meant to be with me. I know it, otherwise that REALLY GREAT STORY wouldn’t have happened. What? You really want to know? Right now? Oh, alright. So, when Zane was still new, I went home for the summer and. . .

Ah, I’m late for drag show practice! Some other time, maybe? ^_- *runs off*

No Me!

So today was a very long and trying day. Things started out bad (we got 2 hours of sleep tops) and just went downhill from there. I worked a full day today (6:30 to 6) and felt sick through most of it. The time I did have off was stressful too. Details don’t matter, though, because in the end, everything always turns out alright. I have my kids, I have my Nikki, and we can make each other happy, even when things get rough. A Little Somebody got to play with some cute puppies at work. In fact, this wasn’t the picture I was going to post, but isn’t this just adorable?

Charlie and a Cutie

Charlie and a Cutie

Charlie’s one of the cutest chihuahua’s I’ve ever come across and he absolutely adored her! He slept in her lap while she knitted and curled up with her as she napped. It was so cute! And now on to the picture I started writing this post for.  I was searching for a photo of Spunky to introduce him properly, but that’s going to have to wait for another day because here is a rather improper one.

Hey, I Want in the Picture!

Hey, I Want in the Picture!

Now, Spunky tends to take either perfectly regal or ridiculously silly pictures. I was going to stroke his ego a bit and start with one of the former but instead you get this. This picture is from when Merlin was still brand-spanking new. We took TONS of pictures and from the looks of this one, Spunky was getting jealous over all the attention the kitten was getting. Now don’t get me wrong, Spunky loves his kitten, but there’s only so much sharing a spoiled pup can do before it gets to him. It looks to me like we were trying to get a picture of Merlin being all cute and Spunky had had enough and jumped in there at the last second to be “That Guy”. Look! His eyes are all big and everything! What a funny boy. So hello world. This is Spunky at a hilariously awkward moment in his life. Oh, and Merlin is NOT that innocent anymore, as you’ll soon see. Aren’t they just so lovable? Bad day all fixed!
