Mutts n' More

A Random Collection of Fur-Covered Happiness

Welcome!

You've happened upon a place filled with animals so cute and furry (or not) that they can brighten anyone's day. Their stories are often touching or inspirational and are sure to make you realize how important the animals in your lives are. Enjoy!

If you're looking for something a little more real and down to earth, then stay and read about the life of a lesbian couple with 14 furry and scaly kids who are just trying to make it through life's craziness together. It has its ups and downs and twists and turns but one thing's for sure: it's never boring!

Home Sweet Home

Howdy everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates. It was near impossible to get pages to load on the dial-up and photos were not happening at all so I didn’t even bother trying after that first night. The rest of the trip went well. On Friday we went to Kenosha to visit 3 different museums – a Civil War Museum, a dinosaur place, and the Public Museum. I guess my favorite was the Civil War one, which we went to first. I liked seeing all the artifacts and tried to take pictures and the stuff I read was interesting but there was WAY too much to read. I am an extremely slow reader, so I gave up after awhile. There were also the creepiest mannequins there that talked at you if you got close to them. Yeah, freaky! After that museum we went to the lakefront to have lunch. After lunch we walked along the rocks lining the lake, but not before I fed a whole flock of seagulls my crusts! It was so fun! I love birds like seagulls and pigeons, believe it or not. I think they’re beautiful. All birds are. So that was awesome! Skipping around on the rocks was fun, too, and I got to walk on them with everyone. We also climbed up a little blinky-light tower thing (I wouldn’t say lighthouse, I dunno what it is) which was cool, but I’m afraid of heights too. Yeah, after that we went to the dinosaur place which was pretty disappointing since it was only one room with like 20 skeletons (casts) all crammed onto this tiny platform. And this one dinosaur that was in “feeding position” just looked like it had toppled over. LS liked it, though, so that’s good. She was cute getting all excited over all of it. She’s adorable. In fact, here’s a picture of her with a not so furry or scaly beast.

"Get A Picture of Me With My Dinosaur!"

"Get A Picture of Me With My Dinosaur!"

One cool part of it was that downstairs you could see parts of the baby Tyrannosaurus Rex that the guy that runs the place helped discover out in Montana. They call it Little Clint and it appears to be the youngest T. Rex ever discovered. Neat, huh? After the dinosaur place we went to the public museum, which I must admit, pretty much bored me. I was sick of looking at things through glass, so seeing some fossils and really fake mammoths didn’t do much for me. The upstairs was better because we got to see artwork by the guy who drew “Catwings”. I remember reading some of those books in Singapore and I loved them! Nikki knows a lot more about the stories and has read books in the series I didn’t know existed, but I still enjoyed it. They also had a section of mostly ivory carvings from Asia which I would have taken more interest in had I not already been museumed-out, as it were. Plus, my house is filled with Asian antiques, so it takes quite a bit to impress me. Still, it was a good day. Yesterday we pretty much sat around the house, did laundry (Nikki did, anyway) and then played Cranium at night which went ok. It was the fastest game of it I’d ever played. Note: I suck at sculpting “North Pole”. Oh well. Over the whole time I was also trying to look at the cameras on eBay and talking to family about them. (Random question: Why “eBay”? I get the e part, but Bay? Anyone know?) Anyway, today I went ahead and BOUGHT MY CAMERA! Awesome, huh? Oh, if only it were that simple. I believe this needs its own paragraph, even.

So my family and Nikki helped me decide which one I should get. I really needed to get it before tonight because I had a coupon for 10% off that expired today. So I finally decide this morning to go ahead and spend the $800 to get my camera. Only problem is, the dial-up means it takes an hour and a half to get through the 10 pages it takes to confirm everything. Yeah, then I see that even though I changed my address to make it match my card and therefore be a confirmed address, Paypal didn’t register that change and so it is the wrong, and therefore unconfirmed, address. The seller I bought from won’t send to unconfirmed addresses so I’m screwed. Yeah, an hour and a half was all for nothing. Plus I’m now out $800. *sigh* So we get in the car and start driving home and when my dad calls to ask me if it all worked out, I tell him. He tells me to call Paypal and see what they can do. *another sigh* So then I call my mom to get her to find out the number for me and I call Paypal. I listen to stupid ads about Paypal and eBay for like 10 minutes and talk to the dumbest woman ever. I tell her the problem is the address and she tells me she deleted the whole transaction. Thanks, how helpful. . . I then call the seller and this guy is actually nice and tells me that we need to do a mutual cancellation and he’ll send me the directions on how to do that. Okay, not so bad, I’ll just do that and then buy it again with the right address. So I call my mom back and ask her if she can go into my accounts and rebuy the camera. She tries to and everything goes smoothly until we discover the coupon doesn’t work anymore since I already used it on the now-cancelled camera. *wince* So then I have to call Paypal again. The stupid automated woman asks me who I want to talk to. Now I don’t know how many ways there are to say “Coupons and Special Offers” but apparently I can’t say it right – even when I mimic how she says it exactly. On my last attempt I just yelled it and got transferred somewhere. A few minutes later and I’m talking to a woman who can’t speak English who tells me that she can’t help me and she’ll transfer me to the Coupons and Special Offers people. Great. Okay, now I kid you not! I sit there and call off the timer on my phone as time goes by: 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes. . . At 47 minutes I use Nikki’s phone to call my mom. Actually, I call and get some old woman telling me it’s a wrong number so I have to call my sister, have her give the phone to my mom and then have my mom call me back. See how this day was going? So I call her and ask her to try cancelling the first one and maybe that will give me back my coupon. As I’m talking to my mom, someone at Paypal finally picks up so I hang up with my mom. Now, the guy was really nice and said he was sorry for what happened and that he can help me. He also tells me that Paypal doesn’t have to ability to cancel transactions so the first woman I talked to had no idea what she was doing. He also sent an email to the seller on my behalf just to make sure they cancel it. He then resets my email address so my coupon will work again. Yay! Nice guy! Still, when I got off the phone, I had been on it for 58 minutes. Don’t believe me?

Insane!

Insane!

So after all that, I call my mom back, the coupon works and I have my camera ordered – again. I still have to call the place tomorrow and confirm this new order and make sure the old one is cancelled and then I have to do some legal crap through eBay so they know that it was a mutual cancellation and I don’t get a non-payment mark on my account. Whatever. The important thing is – I’m gonna get my camera! And in time for the holidays! I can take amazing pictures of everyone I love now! I wish I’d been able to get one sooner so I could have had pictures of up north, the lake, Spunky at the parks, and the dogs at work, but it just didn’t happen. At least I won’t be missing out on even more time. Yay! Nikki is so happy too. Now I need to start working on something for her for Christmas. I want her to be happy and she’s special so she needs something really special. *gets excited about ideas*

Okay, so I know that this post really had nothing to do about animals and I’m sorry, but I’ve been thiking. My original idea was just to post a picture of an animal everyday and maybe comment a little about it. But I’ve found myself wanting to talk more about my life in general. And the title of the place is Mutts n’ More. I thought that was just because it wasn’t dogs I was going to post pictures of but it can also be that while this is about animals, it’s also about more. It’s about me and Nikki and the crazy things that happen in our life. A lot of that does have to do with our kids, of course, but sometimes things just happen to us like this and I find it funny so maybe that could cheer people up too. I don’t know, what do y’all think? Do you wish I’d just shut up about me and only post cute pictures like so many other places do, or do you think it might interest people to read about our family – all of it and not just the kids? I mean, you can always just look at the pictures and leave if you want, but if you want more truth and detail then it’s all right here, too. I hope you don’t mind reading the things I blab about. Anyway, I’m not going to leave you longing for something cute and cuddly to “aww” over. I’ve always got that, never fear!

Bindi Sue!

Bindi Sue!

This is Bindi, the Jeske’s nearly 2 year old golden retriever. And this picture just makes me laugh because she’s got crazy eyes and her smile is just awesome. Seriously, can you look at that picture and not crack up laughing? I didn’t think so. ^_- I hope all of you had great holidays and I’m happy to be back and making you smile again!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hey everyone! We made it here around 1:30 last night and got to bed close to 3! Yeah, late night. It was tough falling asleep because the room was loud. Also, several times during the night I would stretch my legs out and my feet would get attacked because the cats were up in a cage at the foot of m bed and I’m guessing Merlin got bored. This morning we got up around 9, ate some waffles for breakfast then went to Walmart for some last minute food shopping. I had to get some ingredients for my secret sauce and some for my deviled eggs. When we got back I got to work making my deviled eggs and then my white sauce. I did a good job, too! My eggs were a total hit – Nikki’s family liked mine a ton more than they did Nikki’s mom’s, which became a huge joke between us. Nikki and I liked my white sauce, too, but most people didn’t have any. Oh well, more for us! Dinner was good but everyone came and went in like 2 hours so it was pretty much a blur. Nikki’s green bean casserole was awesome too! After that, we attempted watching some drag videos but Nikki’s dad didn’t pay attention at all and it mostly just made me mad because of the poor videography – it was pretty much always zoomed too far out for us to see anything. Blah. Oh well, the night got AMAZING when we watched the UT vs. A&M game! Hell yeah, Longhorns! 49 to 9! We owned them! Now, I love A&M too, but when it comes down to those two facing off, it’s always UT all the way! If Oklahoma wins this weekend then we’ll be headed to the National Championship! Yeah! Hook ‘em, Horns!

Yeah, I’m sure you don’t care, but I was super excited! Nikki and I watched it together and even LS got way into it and was super cute. Umm, tomorrow we’re going to like 3 different museums and the lakeshore or something so that’ll be fun, I hope. I’ll hopefully post tomorrow about it. Also, I know I forgot to post a video yesterday but I’m sure you understand how frantic we were. Next week, okay? So here, to send you off on a happy Thanksgiving night is a picture of Spunky (in his holiday attire) enjoying some leftovers. Good night everyone!

And here is where a cute picture of our pup is supposed to be. But this place has the slowest dial-up I’ve ever come across and after several attempts in several ways to upload the pic for over an hour now (I kid you not), I guess there actually won’t be any cuteness until we get home on Sunday. I’m so sorry.

Happy Thanksgiving, Pup!

Happy Thanksgiving, Pup!

Ninja, Ninja Dog!

Today’s going to be a really short post. Sorry, but I’m sure you understand the significance of holidays and a lack of time to get ANYTHING done. I have work in 1 hour and then I work until 6. After I get off work, Nikki and I (along with Spunky and the cats) have to pile into her car (*sniffs about her own car*) and drive 6 hours to get to her house in Southern Wisconsin. Yeah, 6 hours, all tonight, all in the pitch black that is a winter night in the north. Awesome. This means that in the next hour we have to get everything as ready as possible since we cannot be leaving any later than 6 or it’d just be ridiculously dangerous. Of course, being us, nothing was done until today. I’ve already cleaned the rat cages and Nikki’s packed our clothes, and we’ve gathered a few things (laundry, movies, cameras, etc.) but there’s still the ferrets to set up, the fish bowls to clean, bathroom necessities to gather, the dog and cats to ready, the car to pack, and all that fun extra little running around like chickens with our heads cut off. Wish us luck! Still, during that time, we managed to find amusement when LS brought Spunky into the room dressed like this:

Ninja Dog!

Ninja Dog!

He’s always good for a laugh. And he seriously doesn’t mind getting dressed up. We’re lucky to have him – especially in stressful times. Good pup!

How To Describe Today?

You want my day summed up in one picture? Here.

My Poor Car!

My Poor Car!

Yeah. Makes me want to cry. This is what happened to my pretty little car today. Now I’m perfectly unharmed. Want to know why? Because my car was parked when this happened. Yep, just sitting there all innocent like then wham! The problem is, we only have a certain number of spaces in the parking lot at my work and they were all filled so I had to park back and off to the side of the rest of them. My coworker went to leave and her truck wasn’t moving because of the snow so she gunned it. Well, then when she tried to brake, it didn’t work because of the snow/ice on the pavement so she ran into my car and her truck’s back bumper did all this. Seriously, she had supposedly left and then came back in, looking dazed and just motioned for me to come to the back. Then she told me that her truck slipped and she hit my car. Okay, I remain calm and figure she just dented it in the door or something. Then I go outside and I still remain calm but only because of the shock. My beautiful car was all smashed up. Okay, now I know we’re not talking a ferrari here. It’s a 1995 Mazda Protege with nearly 150,000 miles on it. But it’s MY car. My dad gave it to me. It’s my first car (my grandma gave me an old Ford Ranger that I haven’t parted with either that’s down in Tennessee.) It’s the car I’ve had my entire time at college and the one that has safely taken me across the country (from WI to TX) and back several times. I love my car. Ask anyone, I get upset when I find a new scratch or ding on it. Then this happens. I’m still in shock, I think. My coworker was really nice about it (well, she couldn’t really blame me, right?) and she drove it over to an auto repair shop to have an estimate done on it. Later on she also took it back to get the wheel hub pulled up a bit since it was rubbing on my tire. So she’s being very helpful and all but it still sucks, obviously. The worst part about it? She has no insurance. I have insurance, but only liability – my car isn’t “worth” it to insure since it’s so old. Yeah, you want to know how much it’s going to cost to fix my car? $1700! They have to completely replace my right fender, my bumper, my grill, and my right headlights. They have to hammer out the crunched corner of my hood. They have to make sure that my passenger door opens freely again (since right now it gets hung up on the busted fender). They may or may not (depending on if it’s salvageable or not) have to replace my windshield wiper fluid container. Then they will have to repaint all the replaced parts and put on my pinstripe and DX decals. This may sounds silly, but I got really happy when I saw that they thought to replace the decals because details like that matter to me and it made me feel like they really cared. Another thing that may make me look silly but I don’t care? I want to ask them if I can keep my grill. My car means a lot to me and I’m sentimental. My car has the old Mazda symbol on it, which I like better than the new one. So maybe I’m weird but if it makes me happy, why should it matter? So yes. That was how my day began. Now, I feel really bad because $1700 is a huge amount of money for my coworker to come up with – that’s the total amount of money I’ve been able to save for the 5 months I’ve been working! But it’s also not my fault. And I can’t help that she doesn’t have insurance. Seriously, people, let this be a lesson. ALWAYS insure your car! Hell, try to insure everything you can. It’s worth it. Makes me wish I had renter’s insurance. When we move to Austin, we will DEFINITELY do it! People may think “it’ll never happen to me” but you never know. Okay, consider this – it costs me less than $150 to insure my car for a whole 6 months. Fixing my car from a 5 second accident costs $1700. Wow. So yeah, I feel bad but there’s not much I can do about it. The coworker that hit my car as well as another one asked if I should just get a new car. Umm, no. $1700 would not get me a nice used car and I wouldn’t have a clue what was wrong with that car ayway. We’ve put $1000’s into my car fixing it up over the years, it has brand new tires, and, well, it’s my car. I’m not just going to replace my perfectly good car just because it got smashed. Anyway, I stayed pretty calm throughout though when I talked to my dad, Ted, I started to cry because I was upset. He helped calm me down, though because he told me what I should do. My other dad, Ricky, also gave me advice on what to do and he told me that he thought the estimate was good. Still, very stressful situation.

I’m sorry that I wrote about my car for so long, but this is my life. Also, my bad luck was not over at that point. I also got bit by a cat today so I have to watch that for infection and then later on I had a 10 minute nose bleed that left me feeling light headed. Yay day! So I need another cheer up post – they seem to be in high demand right now, don’t they?

I Have No Idea...

I Have No Idea...

Haha, check out the background! I think I’ll stick to that one picture for tonight. Spunky is funny enough on his own. I seriously have no idea what he was doing, but this is hilarious! I’m off to eat my Chinese, lay on the comfy bed Nikki made me on the floor, and watch Charmed. *sigh* So much for productivity. My drive is shot – too much happened today for me to want to do anything but lay here. I hope everyone else’s day went better!

Boxes Make the Best Toys

Nikki and I were watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition today (as is a daily habit as of late) and the family today was a woman who had adopted 7 children with different disabilities. People like that are just amazing. But it got me thinking about adoption again. Nikki and I have thought about all sorts of options for having children in the future. We can never have an “oops” or just decide to have a baby and, well, you know. It sucks. It’s a hard truth. And no matter if we decide to adopt or try and have our own, it’s a long, expensive, stressful process. Anyway, the reason I started looking more into adoption today is because I feel about children as I do about animals. There are so many children out there already that need someone to love them. Why should they go through life without a family just because everyone wants to have their own? Okay, I’m still not sure what we’d decide and I definitely know the draw of having your own child, but maybe both would work, too? Have your own and adopt? I don’t know. Anyway, I looked into gay adoption and found a pretty cool place that does open adoptions and they had lots of gay couples that they had already placed babies with and that were still looking. It was just neat to see a place that was so open and accepting of gay parents. Still, to give an example of how complicated having children will be for us, if we decide adoption we have to decide how old we want the child to be, if we want an international adoption, if we want an open or closed adoption and add to all of that the fact that whichever we choose we will have to find gay friendly adoption agencies and hope the country hasn’t stolen all of our rights by then. *sigh* Sometimes it just seems to overwhelming, but we still want to have kids in the future. We’ll see.

So I was going to talk about my leopard geckos tonight but somehow the day flew by and I’m tired. I want to be able to give them a proper introduction so tonight I’m going to just post some cute pictures I got of the kitties yesterday. Anyone who’s ever even met a cat knows that the title of this post is true. Nikki and I had boxes out in the living room since we’ve slowly been working on packing and the cats thought that was just the coolest thing. Hope you enjoy!

Merlin Started the Trend

Merlin Started the Trend

The boxes were stacked 3 deep and they loved hiding in the middle one. He looks so cute and innocent – hah!

She's So Dainty in There!

She Looks So Dainty in There!

Akima is always so aware of her surroundings. And she looks like she’s trying to find a way to cause trouble in this picture!

He's Trying to Be So Sneaky. . .

He's Trying to Be So Sneaky. . .

Zane was funny because he seemed like he was going to stalk her, but then he decided it wasn’t worth the effort and just stayed in there and watched her.

And last, but not least:

How Many Kitties Can You Spot?

How Many Kitties Can You Spot?

Haha, that picture totally made me laugh when I looked at it later. I didn’t even know all three of them were there until then. Haha. Cute!

There you have it. I hope you enjoyed the cuteness! There’ll be more packing madness to come, I’m sure! Have a good night/day everyone!

Squeeze Please

Hey everyone! Today has been an extremely lazy day, and I’m starting to feel bad about it. We woke up at close to 11! Since then there has been absolutely no packing or cleaning, either. Nikki’s being good and making a new Wordpress theme. It’s giving her a bit of trouble with the coding, but she’s a genius so I know she’ll get it soon. And it’s really cool looking! I, on the other hand, have just been trying to find ways to get my blog out there, like by joining NaBloPoMo (I know I didn’t do it right) and linking to other pet blogs. I’ve actually found some pretty cool ones, so you should check them out. Some are mostly cute daily pictures but others have resources and charity information and cool stuff like that. You might find something you like. Just promise to stay here too! ^_-

So, onto the last kid that currently lives with us. She also happens to share the title of “newest”. Now, she’s not exactly the kind of kid that I’d get by myself but Nikki wanted her so we got her. Why did I not leap at the chance myself? Well, I have a silly little fear about snakes. Lucky for me, this is a ball python we’re talking about, and they are darn cute! Actually, this one is downright beautiful!

Kendi

Kendi

Just look at her colors! She has a pretty golden color and it’s cool how the stripe down her back is unbroken for parts up towards her head. Kendi has a pretty interesting story, too. So remember how I was talking about getting Chunky on my birthday weekend? And how Nikki was particularly fond of a certain ball python? Well, this is her! So Nikki was looking at her for nearly an hour and I told her she should go ahead and get the snake but she kept saying no. We finally left the pet store and went to Barnes & Noble and looked at books (we love going to the bookstore!) but the entire time we were there I kept telling her (and the others) that they should go get the snake. Well, we ran out of time because we had to go pick up our roommate’s friend who had come in on the bus. So we went home empty handed. That night I kept bothering Nikki about the snake because I knew how much she wanted it. She told me that she had wanted a snake since as long as she could remember (even longer than she’d wanted a tablet – which I got her for her birthday this year). Lauren and LS also wanted a snake. So yeah, I bothered her non-stop and the next morning when she told me she’d dreamed of her, there was no question. I piled us back into the car and we drove the hour and some it takes to get to Duluth. We got to Petco and Nikki ran to the back but she wasn’t sure which one was the one she liked. We were both looking but nothing clicked. We had an employee come over and he started pulling apart this massive snake pile in the corner of the display case. Suddenly, there she was! We just knew it! It was the one Nikki had fallen in love with the day before. We bought her (as well as took Chunky) and drove home. Nikki couldn’t resist it and held Kendi on part of the drive home.

She Was So Happy!

She Was So Happy!

That night we also stayed up til late going to Walmart to buy items to fix up Kendi’s tank. It’s not the most beautiful thing ever with makeshift hides made from tupperware and macaroni boxes but she doesn’t seem to mind. And of course, once we have more money, our kids come first and she will get an upgrade. Anyway, Nikki did a ton of research to find the right name and she eventually settled upon “Kendi” which means “the loved one” in some African dialect (can’t remember which, sorry). She had some problems with feeding her at first but she’s had many successful feeds for a couple months now so everything is all good. I watched Nikki feed Kendi once because she was so excited when she finally got her to eat but in general I just stay away when she’s feeding her. So yeah, there you have it.  The last of the kids that live with us. They’re a handful but, come on, aren’t they just perfect?

Kit-Kitty, Little Kit-Kitty

Howdy all! So I started out today by bolting upright when my alarm went off at 9 and freaking out because it was light out and I thought I was late for work. >_< Awesome. Anyway, we got out of bed pretty soon after and LS made me some cheese toast for breakfast. I pretended to be productive by going to the bank to turn in my paycheck but after that I got lazy and watched some Bewitched and I Love Lucy. I looked up Bewitched on Wikipedia and found out some cool stuff. I had always thought it was Dick York that was gay, but I was wrong. It was actually Dick Sargent! And he and Elizabeth Montgomery (Samantha) were Grand Marshals of the Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade in 1992. Isn’t that just cool? Yeah, it’s not on the subject of pets, but it is something that’s important to me, so why not talk about it? I actually got a nap today, too! An accidental one (I fell asleep during an I Love Lucy episode) but a nap nonetheless! Still tired, though. After that, I woke up and we actually got some work done today! We went into the basement to find some empty boxes and started packing. I packed up some of the game consoles we don’t use much (our NES games, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and N64), Nikki packed up her VHS and our CDs, and we did some dishes. Oh man did we have a lot of dishes (there’s still a ton left) because our roommate never does dishes anymore even though that’s kind of her job. Seriously, the dishes were stacked up like a foot and there were several inches of water in each side of the sink because it wouldn’t drain. It was nasty! So yeah, lots of work, TONS of dust, and we’ve barely made a dent. I’m so freaking out about it now!

Anyway, don’t worry, we’re getting to cuteness too! Tonight is definitely a Merlin night! Nikki already put up an awesome picture of him yesterday on her blog so I was feeling left out. Plus, it just seems like it’s time. Merlin is our newest and youngest kitten – and he was completely unplanned. Want to see who I’m talking about? Good! Because I have the cutest, most heart-meltiest picture to show!

Sleeping Kitten

Sleeping Kitten

That picture was taken on the day we took Merlin home. As I said, we had no idea he was coming. Merlin entered our lives on July 17 of this year. Nikki, our roommate Wendy and I went downtown to attend a Maxwell Street Days. I had never heard of this before, so if you don’t know what it is either, it’s where stores from all over town all come out and sell their goods on the street for discounted prices. Anyway, we were walking around looking at things and we were nearing the end when we saw a certain someone (a teacher of mine) that made us want to turn around and run the other way. But me, being stubborn, decided that I wasn’t going to let him keep me from missing things. Well, we walked past and right there were two women standing with a basket of two kittens and asking if we knew anyone who wanted a free kitten. Of course we scrambled over and cooed over the cute kittens. Yeah, I don’t know how it happened, but Nikki and LS really wanted a kitten and I miraculously said yes. They were just too cute and I hate saying no to them. We weren’t sure which of the two to choose so the women put the basket on the ground and Spunky picked which one he wanted. Seriously, one hung back and the other jumped right over and stuck his face into Spunky’s giant one. So there it was. We had a kitten. We carried him around for the rest of our day there and then took him home and took TONS of pictures! We had to keep him away from the other cats until we took him into the vet the next day and made sure he was feline leukemia negative. Anyway, when he was a kitten he was very sweet and quiet. Yeah, hasn’t been like that in months. Now he is a total terror. He has grown at a rapid rate and is now, at 6 months old, bigger than Akima is! Seriously! From that tiny little fluff ball…

What a Big Boy!

What a Big Boy!

To this! He is such a trouble maker! He drives us insane every single day! He eats our food, drags things all over the house, pounce on us like trampolines, tries to bolt the door every single time we leave or enter the house, annoys Akima, bites us when he gets mad… and we love him! He’s growing into such a big boy. In fact, today is special for him. Guess what I found on the floor earlier? A baby kitten tooth! He’s losing his baby teeth already! I swear we just got him! At the moment he’s passed out on the floor with Spunky. I should do the same soon, though we barely have anything on the bed. That’s thanks to Akima, who tried to kill another fish today, ate Nikki’s plant, and peed on Nikki’s pillow and two of our blankets. Fantastic. *sigh* Our kids truly are our labor of love!

Something’s Fishy Around Here

Oh man, today was very tiring. We had 22 dogs come in today and I did much the same as yesterday but today was also my 11.5 hour work day which just kills me. Okay, you can already tell. My writing sucks tonight. I’m sorry y’all. Don’t expect much from this post.

Leigh chose tonight’s kid and it happens to be Galileo, our other betta.

Galileo

Galileo

I know, that picture is not very good. He’s so small in the picture. I’d ask Nikki to crop it, but we’re both very tired from a very long day.

Galileo came before Aristotle, on April 4 of this year, in fact. He was a surprise to me from Nikki on a random day. Actually, I had seen him the day before at Walmart and we had talked about how pretty he was but we left without getting him. Much to my delight, the next day when I got out of a class, Nikki took me to her room and there was this beautiful betta waiting for me! She gave him to me as part of “I Love You With All My Heart Day”. Confused? Here.

Isn't She Adorable?

Isn't She Adorable?

This made me so happy! I’m not sure exactly why we named him Galileo, but I know it has something to do with another of my old bettas being named Cosmo and us starting to think of galactic type names, which led to astronomers. It just popped into my head and Nikki and LS liked it so that was his name. Anyway, I tried to find a newer picture of him because he’s grown since this picture. His fins are a lot bigger and he’s a bit more red. The last pictures I took of him (on the day Aristotle almost got eaten) turned out blurry, so this is the best I can do.

And sadly, that post was the best I could do. Blah. Forgive me? I promise to try harder tomorrow – after some much needed sleep! Good night everyone!

Totally Tubular Man!

Hi everyone. How were your days? Mine has been long and kind of hectic. I worked at 6:30 today, which is hard enough for me now that my sleep schedule got switched back to my old going to bed after 12 thing. Plus like I mentioned earlier, we had a stressful week so sleep was even worse than it would have been otherwise. Okay, and I must place some blame with how good Charmed is, too. We start watching and don’t want to stop and think “oh, it’s just one more!” all night long! Anyway, today was our bath day special at work. We had 32 dogs come in for baths today! 32! On top of the boarders and daycare dogs, no less. Now, I was lucky and didn’t actually bathe or dry anyone. I just tried to keep everything organized by checking in dogs, marking off when they were bathed and then crossing them off when they were done. I also checked them in and out on the computer and made up all of their invoices. Then there was herding all these dogs into different places around the building and making sure the non-social dogs didn’t attack anyone else. Oh, and let’s not forget trying to chip frozen poop off of the black top and cinder blocks in the play yard. That’s right – frozen poop. That chips apart and sends bits flying everywhere that some dogs feel are necessary to chase down. Not even kidding. Oh, and since everyone loves them, Remington and Browning were there again today and they’re just as cute as ever.

Okay, onto the introduction of the day. Jennifer so kindly decided for us that tonight was a ferret night! And so, without further ado, I give you Nate – as a baby!

Aww, the Little Rascal!

Aww, the Little Rascal!

Nate entered my life on May 10, 2006. He was a ferret from Petco. I know, I know – bad me. Anyway, he wasn’t really mine, at first, I guess. He was picked out by my non-ex girl thing (you know, emo-girl) and for awhile I didn’t want to get attached to him because I had learned how hard it is to split up pets when you go your separate ways. Of course, this is me we’re talking about, so I was in love within days. Little Nate had to stay by himself for awhile in quarantine to make sure the other ferrets wouldn’t get sick, but once he met the other boys, they got along famously. The other boys being Drake and Jingles – not ready to talk about Jingles yet (or his sister Echo for that matter). Nate has driven me nuts since the day I met him and he continues to do so to this very day. See, Nate believes that one cannot possibly eat food from the container in which it is deposited. No, instead it must ALL be dug out and scattered all over the cage level. Now besides it being a bit of a waste of food since some of it falls on the floor or is chewed up into tiny pieces which no one then wants to eat, it is also one of the most ridiculously annoying sounds to hear him tossing it out of his bowl. There’s the scraping of his claws on plastic, the scratch of ferret food against the bowl and the extremely loud sound of all those pawfuls of food falling a few inches to the floor below it. I don’t know how to describe it, just trust me – it grates on the nerves. And he knows he’s not supposed to do it either. When he does, we yell his name and it may stop for a second. Then he tries it again. This repeats until we actually stand up and move over to the cage at which point he jumps away from his food bowl and runs to the cage door and looks at us like he’s totally innocent. We’ve tried putting him in timeout, swatting his nose (with one finger, we don’t beat our children) and squirting him with water. None of it works. It is a trait he will have for life. Oh well, he’s our kid and isn’t driving your parents crazy kind of a requirement? We love him so much! And now for a picture of him more grown up…

Peeking Through the Bars

Peeking Through the Bars

AGH! I would rant about how hard it is to take good pictures of critters as mobile as ferrets, but that would take too long. This was the best I could find at the moment – at least out of those photos of just Nate. It will have to do. Besides, that just means we’ll have to do ferret videos some day!

I hope everyone continues to enjoy meeting the babies and likes the stories that accompany them. Also, someone else (Leigh, perhaps?) pick a number between 1 and 3! Oh, and tomorrow I work 6:30 to 6 so I’m gonna be dead when I get home so I hope I don’t disappoint anyone. >_< I hate Fridays.

Rat-A-Tat-Tat

Hey everyone! I’m not sure if you noticed, but I worked on adding some links today. One, I’m hoping that some of the other daily places will link back to me but mainly I wanted to link to sites involving animal adoption or rescue. I am totally for adoption/rescue over buying a cat or dog or any other kind of animal for that matter. not saying I’m a saint and have never bought an animal, but it is definitely a passion of mine. Just think of how many animals’ lives would be saved if people would just adopt even one animal or if breeders would stop breeding their animals for just one month! I think it would be amazing. Completely unrealistic, but I can hope, right?

So, today I couldn’t decide which kid to introduce so I assigned a species to the numbers 1 through 4 and asked both Mac and Nikki to pick a number. They both chose 3! Cool, huh? I bet you can guess what type of animal was assigned to 3. That’s right!

Chunky!

Chunky!

This is Chunky, our male rat. We have no idea on how old he is because he was already an adult when we rescued him. Chunky is one of the two newest additions to the family. Chunky comes from Petco, though not in the typical way. For my birthday weekend in August, we went to Duluth which, of course, included a trip to the pet store. We looked at all the animals in the store (okay, not the fish, but all the mammals, reptiles, and birds) and bought a few things. Nikki was particularly enamored with a ball python she saw there, though she knew we couldn’t have one. Anyway, as we were leaving, we went to look at the animals they had for adoption at the front of the store (as in, the pets that people turn in to the store so the store can find them a new home). There were two really big male rats living together in this giant cage. They seemed to love one another a lot and curled up together in their house. Yeah, nice story, huh? Prepare yourself.

We returned to the store the next day and there was only one rat in there. I inquired as to what had happened to the other one and got an answer I never expected – he had been sold as snake food. Someone turned in their pet rats to Petco and one was given away as snake food! THINK before you give your animals to someone else! Please! The managers told me that they were sick over it happening and that it had been a mistake. One said she saw the guy leaving, the cashier said he’d adopted out a rat and she was like “Not to that guy! He’s a snake owner!” So she was upset. But it turns out that the cashier knew exactly what he’d been doing. He told Nikki that the snake guy had come up with a frozen rat and the cashier told him to just take one of the adoptable rats because they cost less! Can you f*cking believe it? I’m not one to swear on here, but just thinking about this story again is getting me livid! I hate people like that! I’m pissed and I want to cry. Why are people like that?

Okay, so let’s get back to happiness – the point of this blog. After hearing that, there was not even a doubt in my mind. We went over, played with the rat, and I bought him on the spot. There was no way that little (okay, huge) boy was going to have the same fate as his friend. Still, I couldn’t help but wish that we had saved them both the first day – of course we had no way of knowing. I guess you just do what you can do. At least Chunky got a reprieve, right? Yeah, Chunky’s name may seem mundane compared to Morgan and Meetu but it actually started out as a joke. We had no idea what to name him and I just started calling him Chunky one day and, as it usually goes, it stuck. I don’t think he minds. He should be proud of how big he is. So there he is. Once an abandoned pet, then spared a horrible fate, and now he’s a happy chittery rat that likes sleeping in his tissue box home. Go Chunky!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, now I know that this is already a tremendously long post – and I apologize – but I have a surprise for everyone! I would just bump it to another day, but I already promised Mac. Plus, I want this to become a regular deal. See, I figure since Wednesday is the so called “hump day” of the week, that you need an extra bit of cuteness to get you through the day. So here you go!
Those little babies are Remington (black) and Browning (brown), two 6 week old lab puppies that came into my work for daycare yesterday. They were just the most adorable little balls of roly-poly cuteness. Nikki got Browning to growl/bark at her and it was just – well, you know. Doesn’t that video just make you melt?
Also, I’m sorry that my posts are always so late. I have no time to write in the morning and with my ADD I’m not very good at just punching out a post real quick. So I’m thinking about maybe writing posts one day in advance so they can always be there right away in the morning. Whatcha think? Oh and Jennifer – pick a number from 1 to 4!
